Toronto, ON (January 24, 2012) – Prince Harry joins four soldiers severely wounded in the conflict in Afghanistan on an ambitious charity trek to the North Pole. HARRY’S ARCTIC HEROES – premiering Saturday, Feb. 25 at 8 and 9 p.m. ET/9 and 10 p.m. PT on Discovery World HD – captures the courage, tenacity and adventure of remarkable young men on an epic expedition. This two-part special highlights the journey towards physical and psychological recovery in support for Walking with the Wounded – a charity to raise money for fellow service men and women returning injured from the front line. With no back-up vehicles or doctors, the team has to pull sledges with all of the equipment and supplies required for the expedition over some of the toughest terrain in the world.

***Media note: Captain Martin Hewitt and Private Jaco van Gass are available for interviews***

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and I want to prove, not just to myself, but to all the other wounded men and women that you can do whatever you set your mind to and that life goes on after injury. I will do everything I can to complete this challenge.” – Private Jaco Van Gass

“This expedition is an amazing opportunity to achieve something truly special and raise the profile of those injured on operations in service. It will be the greatest physical challenge I’ve taken part in to date.” – Captain Martin Hewitt

Prince Harry joins Private Jaco van Gass (26), whose arm was amputed after he was hit by a grenade; Captain Martin Hewitt (29), whose right arm is paralyzed after a bullet went through his right shoulder; Captain Guy Disney (28), who lost a leg to a rocket propelled grenade; and Sergeant Steve Young (28), whose back was so severely damaged by an IED blast that he was told he might never walk again. These young men are determined to reach the top of the world to highlight the plight of the 1,700 plus service personnel injured in Afghanistan since the conflict began.

Funds raised by the Walking with the Wounded North Pole 2011 expedition went to benefit a number of charities providing help for servicemen and women facing new lives after injury.
