NHL Network Canada Announces 2009-10 Live NHL Game Schedule (September 25, 2009)

– ON THE FLY returns Oct. 1 with new analysts Denis Potvin, Kevin Weekes and Pat Flatley –
TORONTO, ON (September 25, 2009) – NHL Network™ Canada drops the puck on the live 2009-10 NHL® regular-season schedule Oct. 2 when captain Sidney Crosby and the Stanley Cup® champion Pittsburgh Penguins raise a new banner to the Mellon Arena rafters before opening the season against the New York Rangers. In all, NHL Network Canada will televise 30 live games throughout the regular season.
NHL Network’s flagship show, NHL ON THE FLY, will begin one hour earlier this season at 8 p.m., ET. Appearing nightly throughout the season starting on Oct. 1, the program features up-to-the minute hockey information, live look-ins, extended highlights, overtime shootouts, real-time scores, interviews, pre- and post-game reports and news conferences. Hockey Hall of Famer Denis Potvin, along with NHL standouts Kevin Weekes and Pat Flatley, join the roster, which includes hosts Dan Pollard and Brian Duff and expert analysis from a variety of NHL veterans, including former GM Craig Button, Hockey Hall of Famer Larry Murphy, Gary Green, Dave Reid and more.
The live game schedule in Canada focuses on weekend games, with 18 games on either Friday or Sunday. The San Jose Sharks, the defending Presidents’ Trophy winners, will make a League-high 10 appearances on the Network, followed by the Anaheim Ducks (6), Pittsburgh Penguins (5) and Dallas Stars (5).
Highlights of the NHL Network Canada schedule this season include:
- Friday, Oct. 2 –Sidney Crosby and the Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins raise a new banner to the Mellon Arena rafters before opening the season against Henrik Lundqvist, Marian Gaborik and the New York Rangers at 7:30 p.m. ET.
- Sunday, Dec. 20 – Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane and the rest of the Chicago Blackhawks will look for revenge on Pavel Datsyuk, Henrik Zetterberg and the Detroit Red Wings in a re-match of last season’s Western Conference Final at 7 p.m. ET.
- Thursday, Feb. 4 – Ryan Getzlaf and the Anaheim Ducks battle the Los Angeles Kings for L.A.-area bragging rights at 10:30 p.m. ET.
- Wednesday, Mar. 10 – Dynamic offensive players Alex Ovechkin and Eric Staal square off in a key Southeast Division showdown when the Carolina Hurricanes visit Washington at 7 p.m. ET
- Sunday, Apr. 11 – On the last day of the regular-season, 2009 first-overall selection John Tavares and the New York Islanders host 2005 first overall pick Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins at 5 p.m. ET.
Anticipation for the 2009-10 NHL season is running high, and next week NHL Network has special season-preview programming leading up to puck drop on Oct. 1. It gets started Monday, Sept. 28, at 10 p.m. ET with a special one-hour preview of the Eastern Conference. Tuesday brings a one-hour preview of the Western Conference, again at 10 p.m. ET. Wednesday will be the special IS THIS THE YEAR preview show, where NHL Network hockey experts predict the answer to this season’s burning questions – such as “Is this the year we see a repeat Stanley Cup Champion?” or “Is this the year Ovechkin nets 70 goals?”
NHL Network is nominated for a 2009 Gemini Award in the Best Sports Analysis or Commentary Program, Series or Segment category for the BRODEUR: A WINNER ABOVE ALL tribute program to New Jersey Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur. NHL Network will rebroadcast the special on Sunday, October 4 at 8 p.m. ET.
